Guide for Setting Up Microsoft Authenticator and Office 365 Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

There are two parts to setting up your updated MFA security settings. First, you will need to install the authenticator app on your phone. Second, you will need to register the app in your Office 365 account.

Installing Microsoft Authenticator on Your Mobile Device

  1. Download the Microsoft Authenticator app to your mobile device.

  1. You can download the Microsoft Authenticator App from the Apple App Store or from the Google Play Store:

Adding MFA to your Office 365 Account

  1. Open a browser on your computer and go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/. Sign into your Office 365 for business account.
  2. Click on “Security info”.
  1. Click on “Add sign-in method”.
  1. Choose “Authenticator App” from the drop-down menu.
  1. Click on “Add”.
  1. If you have already installed the Microsoft Authenticator app, click on “Next”. If you have not installed the Microsoft Authenticator app, please review “Installing Microsoft Authenticator on Your Mobile Device” before proceeding.
  1. Click “Next” again.
  1. On your mobile device, open the Microsoft Authenticator app. In the app, select “Add account” and choose "Work or school account". If you see the option to “Scan QR Code”, select that instead.

    1. If this is your first time using the app, you can expect to see multiple permissions prompts, including one regarding notifications for verification. Select “Approve” or “Accept”.
  2. Point your mobile device’s camera at the square QR code on your screen. Scan the QR code to
    add the account.
  1. Click “Next”.
  2. If you selected “receive notifications for verifications,” you will receive a prompt verifying your account on your mobile device . Select “approve”.
  1. Once your app is registered, you will receive a notification on your desktop. You will also see “Microsoft Authenticator” listed as a sign-in method.
